2017 Paragliding World Cup Pico Do Gavião: Task 4

We are running out of ways to say just how good the flying has been in Brazil.

It is hard to believe you can fly an out and return course of almost one hundred kilometers in winter, but that is exactly what we did. The start and first turnpoint was to the east before a long leg to the west before the return to Aguas da Prata.

Samuel was hot out of the blocks forcing the pace to the first turnpoint before a large gaggle got organised for the westerly leg. The kilometers were systematically eaten away as the lead group flew from one strong thermal to the next without hesitation en mass. Frank and Andre managed to get away from the lead group in a small gaggle for a while to the west before the long glide home.

The conditions keep improving which made the task a joyful affair with regular climbs in strong lift to great heights. We worked hard to stretch the big lead gaggle and finally succeeded with Samuel and Frank in the top four followed by Jeison and Andre.

The GIN team was first for the second consecutive day leaving us a single point behind top spot in the overall team ranking. All team members are now in the top eight with Frank in third followed by Andre in fourth place.

There are many talented Brazilian pilots present. They dominate the leaderboard with no less than seven in the top ten overall placings. Clearly local knowledge is an advantage.

The competition is only half way done and it feels as though we have been here for weeks!
